1976 First Sri Lankan President of the United Nations General Assembly

In 1976, Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe, Ceylon’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was appointed as the President of the United Nations General Assembly. A position voted for by the representatives of the United Nations General Assembly on a yearly basis, Mr Amerasinghe is the only Sri Lankan to have achieved this feat.
