1987 Sri Lanka takes the lead in providing Shelter for the Homeless
Ranasinghe Premadasa, former President of Sri Lanka, proposed at the United Nations, to declare an International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. The proposal was unanimously accepted at the 37th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the year 1987 was declared as the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he initiated the “Gam Udawa” housing development project which focused attention on the plight of the homeless and disadvantaged. Under this programme, the Government built 100,000 houses and commenced the 1,000,000 housing units’ project, which was recognized globally by the United Nations.
