On 24 October 2015, the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, was celebrated under the patronage of His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena, the Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Speaker Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, and the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. R. Sampanthan, at an event held at the UN Compound in Colombo.
The 60th Anniversary since Sri Lanka became a Member State on 14 December 1955 was also marked at the event. To highlight the twin anniversaries, a Publication, a Postage Stamp, a Video Documentary, a Newspaper Supplement, and a Public Exhibition were launched.
These activities were developed as part of a media and communications campaign, 'Our UN. Apey UN. Engal UN’, jointly delivered by the United Nations and the Government of Sri Lanka. To deliver this year-round campaign that celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the UN and the 60th Anniversary since Sri Lanka became a Member State, the United Nations in Sri Lanka worked closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – UN Division, Ministry of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media, Ministry of Posts, Postal Services & Muslim Religious Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education & Highways, Ministry of Defense, and the Urban Development Authority.
