International Day of Peace at the Open University, Colombo – September, 2016

A #MeetTheUN session was held at the Open University of Sri Lanka, Colombo, in September 2016, to mark the international Day of Peace.

The UN Resident Coordinator along with Five Heads of UN Agencies participated in the session: Ms. Una McCauley – UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Paula Bulancea – UNICEF Representative a.i., Ms. Sveva Pettorino - UNV - Programme Officer, Mr. Jorn Sorensen – UNDP Country Director, Ms. Rianawati - UNHCR Representative and Mr. Juan Fernandez - OHCHR Senior Human Rights Advisor.

Students from the Open University, The University of Colombo and the Bandaranaike Center for International Studies took part in the session. The session commenced with students building peace pledges in groups focusing on children, human rights, forced displacement, volunteerism or sustainable human development.

Following their presentations, the UN Heads of Agencies conducted a panel discussion on peace, touching on the topics raised by the students in their presentations. The students engaged in the discussion by asking questions and learning more about the UN's work in Sri Lanka and around the world with regard to peacebuilding.
