A 'Meet the UN' session was held at Jaffna University in March 2016, to mark International Women's Day.
Four UN Heads of Agencies participated in the session: Ms. Rebecca Tavares - UN Women Representative to India, Bhutan, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka, Mr. Donglin Li - International Labour Organisation - ILO Sri Lanka Country Director, Mr. Jorn Sorensen - UNDP Sri Lanka Country Director, and Mr. Alain Sibenaler - UNFPA Sri Lanka Representative.
Over 100 students of the Jaffna University participated in the session, which started off with an interactive quiz on the UN and its work, as well as an awareness session on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. A powerful forum theatre performance was delivered by Act4;Theatre for Change, which highlighted issues women face in the home and the university.
Following the interactive performance, which students engaged in, a group activity was conducted at which students identified the main issues women face in the home, university, work place, and community. The students later presented the issues to the panel comprising of the UN Heads of Agencies. The panel provided feedback on how students can address these issues.
