A #MeetTheUN session was held at Rajarata University, Mihintale, Anuradhapura, in June 2016, to mark World Environment Day.
Four Heads of UN Agencies participated in the session: Ms. Francoise Jacob - United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Director, Mr. Peter Batchelor - UNDP Sri Lanka Resident Representative a.i., Ms. Nina Brandstup - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative, and Mr. NguyenDuc Hoang, World Food Programme Deputy Representative.
Over 100 students of Rajarata University participated in the session, which provided the unique opportunity for youth to directly engage with members of the UN Country Team and other senior UN officials. The session commenced with a friendly debate among students on a topic relating to environmental issues.
Following the debate, the UN Heads of Agencies conducted a panel discussion on the environment, touching on topics such as climate change, disaster risk reduction, solid waste management, and water. The students engaged in the discussion by asking questions and learning more about the UN's work in Sri Lanka and around the world with regard to the environment.
