Launch of the Sri Lanka UN-REDD National Programme

On Friday, 7th June, Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, officially inaugurated a programme to put forests at the heart of Sri Lanka’s strategy to tackle climate change. The programme will help Sri Lanka to prepare for an international mechanism to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+). REDD+ will be part of a future international comprehensive agreement to tackle global warming, which is currently being negotiated through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The 2013 Human Development Report focuses on the Rise of the South

Colombo, April 2, 2013. The Human Development Report 2013 (HDR 2013) published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was launched in Sri Lanka as a collaborative effort of UNDP Sri Lanka and the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) and was presided over by Hon. (Prof) G. L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs.

Japan Supports Family Tracing and Reunification through UNICEF

Colombo, 28 December 2012 –The Government of Japan has partnered with UNICEF to extend support to the Family Tracing and Reunification Project. A funding grant of US$ 445,000 will be used to help families looking for their missing children, provide psychosocial support and build capacity of probation and childcare services.

UNDP launches the Sri Lanka Human Development Report 2012

Colombo, 5th October. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the Sri Lanka Human Development Report 2012 today in the presence of Hon. Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Senior Minister for Monetary Co-operation and Dr. Ajay Chhibber, the visiting UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and Chair, UN Regional Director’s Team, Asia and the Pacific. Titled, ‘Bridging Regional Disparities for Human Development’, this is the second National Human Development Report (NHDR) for Sri Lanka, with the first Report having been produced more than a decade ago in 1998.

Job Bazaar: employment for 334 youth in Ratnapura

With support from the Youth Employment Project (ILO/Japan), the District of Ratnapura recently undertook a new job bazaar. The event brought together a) young job seekers, b) employers and c) training providers. Some 560 youth took part.
