The Director UNOPS, Francoise Jacob handing over certificate of recognition to Mr. Prathapasinghe, Project Director, Ministry of Fisheries
The Project Management specialist globally for the United Nations, UNOPS, has selected a project managed by UNOPS Sri Lanka, as the Project of the Year -2013.
The Project selected was on Post-Tsunami Restoration and Reconstruction of the Fisheries Harbors in the South of Sri Lanka which covered the infrastructure such as break water construction, jetty, landing site, ice manufacturing plan, fuel storage, office buildings to accommodate an auction room, net mending facility and site manager’s office space. The project help expand the business of over a 5,000 fishermen and this positively by way of the quality of life of their families which fall under a Millennium Development Goal that Sri Lanka is targeting as a nation.
The twenty million dollar commercial loan project was funded by IFAD with the Sri Lankan partner being the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation. The Director Mr. Prathapasinghe commenting on the award said, “For a project to be selected as the Project of the Year globally by an UN organization communicates the skill of the Sri Lankan team at UNOPS for infrastructure development. As the Project Director I also value the soft skills that UNOPS demonstrated to bring this project to life in Sri Lanka”.
The Country Representative for UNOPS in Sri Lanka Francoise Jacob stated that “UNOPS’ focus to developing sustainable infrastructure, partnering the respective host government came to a reality with this project. I am glad that we as a team was possible to bring to light Sri Lanka to the global map for outstanding Infrastructure development and a case study for effective Project Management in Sri Lanka. We will want to continue offering this service to the rest of the ministries in line with the National agenda of the Country”
